A bridge to the subway station in Rio

Architecture JBMC complete the station that connects two parts of the city ', passing a river, and includes a pedestrian crossing and road

Cidade Nova is a metro station on Avenida Presidente Vargas, Gamboa, in downtown Rio de Janeiro. Cidade Nova will allow integration between the two existing lines, playing a key role in the FIFA World Cup 2014. Gamboa is an old district in the most decadent, despite his recent infrastructure, and Avenida Presidente Vargas, one of the largest and most frequented streets of the city, requires a physical barrier to its revitalization, revealing the need for a link between the two parties .

In an attempt to connect the neighborhood of Gamboa with the buildings on the opposite side of the main companies, was designed a long covered walkway of 207 meters that integrates both the pedestrian and bus and subway. The bridge is supported by only three steel arches whose bases intersect, which measure 90 feet long, 40 meters, 90 meters and again. Since the bridge next to the passage of the river city Sambódromo, the ceiling height of 6 meters also allow the passage of boats. Adequate lighting enhances night time view of the metal frame construction.

The choice of construction methods and materials has its origins in the local constraints. With the aim of stopping the traffic in the shortest possible way, the partially pre-fabricated steel structure can be produced elsewhere, shortening the work site. Within the same station a row of arches supporting a mezzanine that serves as a liaison between the station and the pedestrian bridge which in future could also be connected with a nearby bus station.

Open to the external environment, different from the others, this station will make use of natural ventilation. Kingdom to good insulation, lighting, rainwater recycling and solar heating and irrigation of the garden, the Cidade Nova will save a significant amount of natural resources.

Designers, Architecture JBMC, were chosen by Metro Rio, the concessionaire of the local subway system, thanks to their vast experience in the design of underground stations.
