Launched in 2008, the European project is coming to its conclusion

The project Urban Soil Management Strategy, which began in October 2008, is heading towards its conclusion. Urban SMS has involved 11 partners over the past 4 years and 7 international cities in Europe, Stuttgart, Prague, Celije, Bratislava, Salzburg, Wroclaw and Milan. The focus of the project was oriented towards the design and development of soil management strategies to be applied to urban planning.

Main actors of the project were public bodies, researchers, trade associations, which, with the aim of raising awareness of citizens and local governments have taken over the areas where priority action. The City of London has submitted its contribution to the project, undertaken by the Urban and Environmental Policy Center Industry: a software developed to analyze the most important factors that determine the value of the soil and the quality of life of residents. The software is able to draw a detailed map of the city's hinterland and identify the gaps, the green areas in relation to the population and how effective are public transport routes.

The aim of the project and its results is to enhance the resource of urban land, not only in the center but also on the outskirts of the city and this is only possible through awareness and cooperation between residents and professionals. For example, the presentation of the software developed for the project in Milan Urban SMS has been a useful opportunity for dialogue, in which it was found that the first place among the uses of urban land, there is leisure time, followed by the Heritage culture and landscape. Only at the last place is the destination for residential construction and economic activities.
